Question 1

What is vocafox and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

vocafox is a level-based vocabulary trainer that runs entirely in your browser — no installation required. Instead of showing you flashcards at random, it guides you through progressively challenging levels for each word: from simple recognition all the way to free recall. This structured approach reduces frustration and helps words stick in long-term memory far more effectively than traditional methods.

Question 2

How many words can I learn for free?

Accepted Answer

The free tier lets you store and train up to 120 words — enough to get a solid feel for the system and see real results. For more vocabulary, paid membership plans are available. Check the current options on the membership page.

Question 3

Does vocafox work on mobile?

Accepted Answer

Yes. vocafox works on any device with a modern browser — phone, tablet, or desktop. No app store download needed. Simply open your browser, visit vocafox.com, and you are ready to go. Your progress is saved to the cloud so you can switch between devices at any time.

Question 4

What makes vocafox different from Anki or Duolingo?

Accepted Answer

Anki is powerful but requires a lot of manual setup. Duolingo is gamified but does not give you full control over the words you want to learn. vocafox sits in between — it gives you complete control over your vocabulary while handling the learning structure for you. You bring the words; vocafox takes care of the rest.

Question 5

Can I use vocafox for any language?

Accepted Answer

Yes — vocafox is language-agnostic. You can use it for any language pair, including non-Latin scripts such as Japanese (Hiragana, Kanji), Arabic, Korean, and more. There is even a dedicated symbol-learning mode designed specifically for mastering new writing systems character by character.

Question 6

How do the learning levels work?

Accepted Answer

Every word climbs through levels of increasing difficulty: 12 levels for a normal word, 25 for a word with a character such as a kanji, and a short track for flip cards. Early levels use multiple-choice cards, first recognising the foreign word, then choosing the native word in reverse. Mid levels add puzzles such as typing a missing letter, finding two swapped letters and sorting scrambled letters. Higher levels ask you to type half of the word and finally the whole word from memory. A correct answer moves a word up one level, a mistake moves it back a few levels, so harder words simply get more practice until they stick.

Question 7

How does character and alphabet learning work?

Accepted Answer

vocafox has a dedicated mode for learning writing systems such as Japanese Hiragana and Kanji, Chinese Hanzi, Arabic script and more. Turn on symbol learning in the settings and add the character to your words. Characters then get their own puzzles: you recognise them first, then write them while they are blurred or partly hidden, and finally write them completely from memory. If you enable the draw pad in the settings, a drawing field appears in these puzzles so you can practise writing the character by hand. This makes vocafox one of the few vocabulary trainers that genuinely supports non-Latin scripts from start to finish.

Question 8

What are flip cards and when should I use them?

Accepted Answer

Flip cards are designed for learning complete sentences and phrases rather than individual words. Each flip card shows a sentence in your native language on one side and the foreign-language version on the other. They are ideal for memorising fixed expressions, common phrases, or grammar patterns that do not fit neatly into a single-word format. Flip cards have their own four-level track focused entirely on sentence recognition and recall.

Question 9

What are decks and how do I use them?

Accepted Answer

A deck is a bundle of one or more chapters, and decks are where all learning happens. You can build a deck from a single chapter or pull vocabulary from several chapters at once, for example mixing food vocabulary, travel phrases and verb forms into one session. Decks use spaced repetition, so each session only brings up the words that are due. Tick show on start and the deck gets its own card on your start page, where you can continue learning with one tap. Decks are perfect for daily review, exam preparation or practising across different topics in one go.

Question 10

What are the number, time and date generators?

Accepted Answer

vocafox includes three built-in exercise generators for numbers, clock times, and calendar dates. These let you practise understanding and producing numbers, telling the time, and reading dates in your target language. These skills are often skipped by vocabulary apps but are essential for everyday communication. The generators create randomised exercises every session so the practice material is effectively unlimited.

Question 11

What do the membership plans cost?

Accepted Answer

vocafox is free to use: the free plan includes up to 120 words and 20 chapters, enough to genuinely test the app. If you need more room, the Supporter plan raises the limit to 1,200 words and the Gold plan to 5,000 words, each billed weekly or monthly. Schools pay per student seat, and teacher accounts are free. All plans include the full feature set; the difference is the storage capacity. Current prices are always on the membership page.

Question 12

Can I add my own images and audio to words?

Accepted Answer

Yes. On paid plans you can attach a personal image and an audio recording to any word. Images and audio are shown during learning sessions, giving your brain additional memory anchors beyond plain text. This is especially useful for visual learners and for languages where pronunciation is important. The number of personal files you can store depends on your membership plan.

Question 13

How do I organise my vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

All your vocabulary lives in your book. Inside it you create chapters, for example Food, Travel and Verbs, and each chapter can have sub-chapters for finer organisation. Words always belong to a chapter. To learn, you combine one or more chapters into a deck. We recommend at most 35 words per chapter, and if you number your chapters, such as 1 Greetings and 2 Food, vocafox can sort them by that number.

Question 14

Do I need to create an account?

Accepted Answer

A free account is needed to save your vocabulary to the cloud. Registration takes under a minute and only requires a username, email address, and password. No payment details are needed for the free tier. Once registered your words are securely stored and accessible from any device at any time. There is no trial period; the free plan is permanently free with no expiry date.

Question 15

Can I export my vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can export any chapter or any deck as a CSV file and open it in Excel, LibreOffice or other tools. Your data is never locked into the platform; you can back it up, move it to other apps or share word lists with others. CSV files can also be imported back into a chapter, and decks offer a ready-to-copy word list you can paste into an AI chat to generate practice sentences.

Question 16

How do I add a new word?

Accepted Answer

Open the chapter in your book and click add next to Words. Choose the type of entry, then fill in the word in your native language and in the language you are learning. Optionally add an article, a description, an example sentence, an image and an audio recording. Once saved, the word starts at level 0. To learn it, add its chapter to a deck. You can also import many words at once from a CSV file. The vocafox manual explains every step in detail.

Question 17

Does vocafox use spaced repetition?

Accepted Answer

Yes. vocafox combines level-based progression with spaced repetition. While a word climbs its levels, correct answers move it up and mistakes push it back. Once it reaches its highest level, it enters a spaced repetition cycle and comes back after growing breaks: 6 hours, 12 hours, then 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and finally 64 days. A mistake resets the cycle. This two-phase approach means every word is actively drilled until you know it, then reviewed just often enough that you do not forget it.

Question 18

What happens when I answer incorrectly?

Accepted Answer

When you get a word wrong, it drops back by one or more levels depending on how far along it was. The word will reappear in your session sooner so you get another chance to practise it. This ensures that genuinely difficult words keep coming back until they stick, rather than disappearing from your queue after a single mistake.

Question 19

Can I reset the progress of a word or chapter?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Open a word and go to its stats tab to set its level to any value, including back to 0, or to change its place in the spaced repetition schedule. This is useful if you have changed a translation or simply want to drill a word from scratch. To reset a whole chapter at once, open the chapter editor and use the level system tab, which sets every word in that chapter to the level you choose.

Question 20

Is there a search function?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The built-in search finds words, chapters and decks by keyword. You can choose what to include: the words themselves and also their characters, descriptions and example sentences, as well as chapters and decks. This makes it easy to manage a large vocabulary collection without browsing chapter by chapter.

Question 21

Can I use vocafox without an internet connection?

Accepted Answer

vocafox is a cloud-based web application and requires an internet connection to load and save your vocabulary. Because your data is stored securely in the cloud, it is always up to date across all your devices. An offline mode is not currently available, but since vocafox runs in any modern browser on any device, a connection is rarely a limiting factor for most learners.

Question 22

What are sub-chapters and how do I use them?

Accepted Answer

Sub-chapters let you divide a chapter into smaller lists for finer organisation. For example, a chapter called Verbs could have sub-chapters for Regular Verbs, Irregular Verbs and Modal Verbs. To create one, open a chapter and click add next to Chapters inside it. Each sub-chapter holds its own words and can be added to decks like any other chapter, so you can learn just the irregular verbs or combine several sub-chapters in one deck.

Question 23

Is there a tutorial for new users?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The written vocafox manual explains everything step by step: chapters, words, decks, the learning levels, spaced repetition, the settings and how schools use classes and tasks. Inside the app, the menu item How to use vocafox has tutorial videos that show the basics, and the get started page on the website has them too.

Question 24

Is my vocabulary data private and secure?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your vocabulary is stored under your personal account and is not visible to other users. vocafox does not sell your data or use it for advertising. All communication between your browser and the server is encrypted. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time. For full details see the privacy policy linked in the footer.

Question 25

Can I use vocafox to prepare for a specific exam?

Accepted Answer

Yes. vocafox is well suited for exam preparation because you have complete control over which words to study. Create chapters for your exam vocabulary, combine them into a deck and push every word through all of its levels until you can recall it from memory. Spaced repetition then keeps the words fresh until exam day. The generators for numbers, times and dates are also useful for language exams that test practical communication skills.
